Ingredients

Steamed Basmati rice ingredients

  • 1 cup (190g) of basmati rice
  • 1.5 cups (355ml) of water
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Optional seasoning

  • 1-2 teaspoons paprika
  • 15 fresh basil leaves - chopped
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Instructions

Steps for Cooking Perfect Basmati Rice on stovetop

    Rinse the Rice:

    • - Place the basmati rice in a fine-mesh strainer. Rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear, removing excess starch to prevent the rice from becoming sticky.

    Toast the Rice:

    • - In a medium pot or saucepan, heat some olive oil over medium-high heat. When the oil starts to shimmer, add the rinsed rice. Stir until the rice is well coated with oil. Season with a pinch of salt and paprika at this point (if using paprika).

    Add Water:

    • - Pour in the water, using the ratio of 1 cup of rice to 1.5 cups of water.

    Cook the Rice:

    • - Bring the water to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until the rice has absorbed all the water and is cooked through.

    Rest and Flavor:

    • - Turn off the heat. Add rice vinegar and fresh basil leaves to the rice, mixing well. Keep the pot covered and let the rice rest for 5 more minutes.

    Fluff and Serve:

    • - Fluff the rice with a fork and serve immediately.

Basmati Rice - Rice Cooker Method

      Prepare the Ingredients:

      • - Place the basmati rice in your rice cooker. Add salt, olive oil, and water. Stir well to combine. If you are using rice vinegar and paprika, add them at this stage.

      Cook the Rice:

      • - Securely cover the rice cooker with its lid. Follow the safety instructions specific to your rice cooker model. If your rice cooker has multiple settings, select the "normal" (regular or sushi) setting, and start the cooking process.

      Rest and Serve:

      • - Once the rice cooker indicates that the rice is done, let the rice sit undisturbed for a few extra minutes to allow it to settle. Fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving. If you are using fresh basil leaves, chop them and mix them into the rice just before serving.

What should I do if my rice cooker doesn’t have a “normal” setting?

          •    Use the closest available setting on your rice cooker, such as “white rice” or “regular.” Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cooking basmati rice.

Can I prepare the rice in advance?

          •    Yes, you can cook basmati rice ahead of time. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-6 days, or freeze it for longer storage.

What should I do if my rice is too dry or crunchy after cooking?

          •    If the rice is too dry, add a bit more water, cover, and simmer on low heat for a few more minutes. If it’s crunchy, you may need to cook it for a bit longer.
