  • 1 cup (150g) zucchini cut into equal-sized slices or quarters
  • 1 cup (90g) broccoli cut into equal-sized florets
  • 2 onions sliced into smaller wedges
  • 2 red bell peppers cut into smaller strips or slices
  • 1 cup (240ml) water for steaming (or enough water to cover 1/4” of the bottom of the air fryer pan)

Garnish (Optional):

  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon talian seasoning or Herb de Provence
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon

Instructions

Air Fryer Steamed Vegetables: Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Cut the Vegetables: Cut the vegetables into uniform bite-sized pieces, the way you plan to serve them. Smaller pieces will cook more quickly than larger ones.
  • Prepare the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F for a few minutes to get it ready for steaming.
  • Add Water to the Air Fryer Pan: Add a small amount of water to the bottom of the air fryer pan or a small pan or steamer basket. This will create steam to cook the vegetables.
  • Arrange the Vegetables: Place the cut vegetables in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Ensure they are spread out evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Steam the Vegetables: Close the air fryer basket and cook the vegetables. Check them after a few minutes:
  • - Tender Vegetables: Broccoli and asparagus will cook in about 5-7 minutes.
  • - Denser Vegetables: Carrots and potatoes may take 10-12 minutes.
  • - Smaller Pieces: Smaller pieces will cook faster than larger ones.
  • Check for Doneness: The vegetables are done when you can easily pierce the thickest part with a paring knife. They should be bright and vibrant in color. Stop steaming when they still have a bit of crunch to them, as they will finish cooking in the residual heat.
  • Serve: Drizzle the steamed vegetables with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and garnish with fresh herbs. Enjoy!

Notes

Safety Disclaimer:

Air fryers are designed to circulate hot air rapidly around the food to cook it quickly and evenly. Adding water to the air fryer can cause it to malfunction, create steam that may damage the internal components, or even pose a safety hazard. If you choose to steam your vegetables in an air fryer you do so at your own judgement. The recipe creator cannot be held responsible or accountable for any malfunction, injury or otherwise issues stemming from your use of an air fryer.
When preparing a meal with steamed vegetables, it's helpful to group together those that have similar cooking times to ensure even doneness. Here are some vegetables that require approximately the same amount of steaming time:

Short Steaming Time (5-10 minutes)

- Asparagus: Tender and thin asparagus spears
- Broccoli: Florets
- Spinach: Fresh leaves
- Green Beans: Whole or cut
- Peas: Fresh or frozen
- Zucchini: Sliced or cut into thin strips
- Snow Peas: Whole

Medium Steaming Time (7-12 minutes)

- Cauliflower: Florets
- Carrots: Sliced or baby carrots
- Brussels Sprouts: Halved or quartered
- Kale: Chopped
- Bell Peppers: Sliced or cut into strips
- Cabbage: Shredded or cut into wedges

Longer Steaming Time (10-15 minutes)

- Potatoes: Small whole potatoes or cubed (red, yellow, or sweet potatoes)
- Winter Squash: Cubed (e.g., butternut squash, acorn squash)
- Beets: Sliced or cubed (may require slightly more time depending on size)
- Parsnips: Sliced or cubed

Tips for Steaming Vegetables:

1. Uniform Size: Cut vegetables into uniform sizes to ensure they cook evenly.
2. Single Layer: Arrange vegetables in a single layer in the steamer basket for even cooking.
3. Check for Doneness: Pierce with a fork to check for tenderness; vegetables should be tender but not mushy.
4. Seasoning: Season steamed vegetables with salt, pepper, herbs, or a drizzle of olive oil or lemon juice after cooking for enhanced flavor.
By grouping vegetables with similar steaming times, you can efficiently prepare a medley of steamed vegetables without the risk of overcooking or undercooking any particular type.
