Instructions

How to make savory fruit sanwoches

    Assemble the Sandwich:

    • Place 2 slices of bread on a flat surface. Add 2 slices of Camembert cheese on each slice.
    • Top the cheese with thinly sliced plums (or spread the plum jam if using), and sprinkle chopped fresh basil, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of pepper.
    • Place the remaining slices of bread on top to create sandwiches.

    Prep for Grilling:

    • Brush the outside of each sandwich with olive oil on both sides to help them crisp up while cooking.

    Grill on the Stove:

    • Heat a non-stick skillet or grill pan over medium heat.
    • Place the sandwiches in the pan and grill for 2-3 minutes per side, pressing down lightly with a spatula. Cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted. If the bread is browning too quickly, lower the heat slightly to ensure the cheese melts properly without burning the bread.

    Air Fryer Option:

    • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
    • Place the sandwiches in the air fryer basket, ensuring they don’t overlap. Air fry for 5-7 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the bread is golden and crispy, and the cheese is melted.

    Cool and Serve:

    • Remove the sandwiches from the heat (or air fryer) and let them sit for 1-2 minutes to allow the cheese to set slightly.
    • Slice and enjoy your delicious grilled sandwich!
    • This method ensures the cheese melts perfectly, and you get a beautifully crispy, golden sandwich every time.

    Notes

    Filling variations:

Here are some fantastic ideas for add-ins, substitutes, and flavor boosters to take your grilled cheese sandwich to the next level:

    Add-Ins for a Flavor Boost:

1.Fig Jam: Sweet and slightly earthy, fig jam pairs beautifully with soft cheeses like Brie, Camembert, or Gouda.
2.Caramelized Onions: Adds a deep, sweet flavor that complements the richness of the cheese.
3.Sliced Apples or Pears: Thin slices of crisp apple or pear add sweetness and crunch, contrasting with the melted cheese.
4.Roasted Red Peppers: Add a smoky, sweet flavor that pairs well with cheeses like mozzarella or feta.
5.Pesto: A spoonful of pesto (basil, arugula, or sundried tomato) adds a burst of herby goodness to the sandwich.
6.Avocado Slices: Creamy avocado is a great complement to tangy cheeses like cheddar or gouda.
7.Sautéed Mushrooms: Earthy and savory, mushrooms pair well with sharp or soft cheeses.
8.Spinach or Arugula: Adding fresh or wilted greens gives a light, peppery balance to the creamy cheese.

    Cheese Substitutes:

1.Brie or Triple Cream Cheese: For an ultra-creamy, indulgent grilled cheese, swap Camembert with Brie.
2.Cheddar: A classic, sharp cheddar is perfect if you want a stronger, more intense cheese flavor.
3.Mozzarella: Mild and super stretchy, mozzarella is a great option for a melty, stringy texture.
4.Gouda: Creamy and slightly nutty, gouda adds depth and richness to your sandwich.
5.Goat Cheese: For a tangy, creamy flavor, goat cheese adds a delightful contrast to sweet or savory ingredients.
6.Fontina: A mild, creamy cheese that melts beautifully, perfect for adding a smooth, buttery flavor.

    Veggie Substitutes and Additions:

1.Tomatoes: Fresh or sun-dried tomatoes add a burst of tang and umami flavor.
2.Zucchini or Eggplant: Thinly grilled slices of zucchini or eggplant add a savory, slightly sweet flavor.
3.Roasted Garlic: For a mellow, slightly sweet flavor that enhances the richness of the cheese.
4.Artichoke Hearts: A bit briny and tangy, artichokes add a Mediterranean flair.
5.Kale or Swiss Chard: Wilted greens add a healthy and slightly bitter contrast to the richness of melted cheese.
6.Pickles or Jalapeños: Add some tang and spice for a briny kick or heat.

    Pesto and Spread Ideas:

1.Basil Pesto: Adds a fresh, garlicky, herbaceous flavor.
2.Sundried Tomato Pesto: Sweet and tangy, this is a great match for mild cheeses.
3.Tapenade (Olive Spread): A salty, umami-packed spread that pairs well with both mild and bold cheeses.
4.Hummus: A creamy, nutty spread that works well with sharper cheeses.
5.Mustard (Dijon or Whole Grain): Adds a little tang and spice to cut through the richness of the cheese.
