Easy Homemade Hoisin Sauce (vegan)

Jump to Recipe

This Easy Homemade Hoisin Sauce is so deliciously rich, flavorful and goes with just about anything. Hoisin sauce is one of my favorite sauces. I can put the stuff on everything. It’s one of those sauces I was late to discover and fell instantly in love with.

Hoisin sauce is an asian version of Barbeque sauce. It’s rich, decadent and absolutely addictive (at least I can’t stop eating it). Hoisin sauce can be served with spring rolls, teriyaki mushrooms, grilled veggies and anything else you can think of.

Original hoisin sauce is made with black bean paste, but as that’s not easy to get ahold of I’ve opted to create a recipe without it – this recipe still has that fully flavored, deep hoisin taste just without the black bean paste.

What’s great about this Vegan Homemade Hoisin Sauce:

Homemade Hoisin Sauce hacks

In order to get that delicious, storebought flavor I recommend using molasses. It adds extra depth and creaminess to the sauce. I’ve tried making the sauce with and without molasses and although both were delicious the sauce with molasses were a step up.
Making a great homemade hoisin sauce is all about getting the flavors right. There needs to be the right balance of sweetness, heat and sourness. One little hack to get it right every time is to add a tablespoon of sweet and sour chili sauce. It gives the sauce extra dimension and gives it that natural flavor balance.
