Easy Savory Vegan Apple and Onion Pie

This savory easy vegan apple and onion pie is delicious and full of flavour and textures. The soft apples and onions are topped with crunchy almonds, creamy cashew cheese or tofu and fresh herbs. 

When people think of apple pie they usually think of dessert with a side of vanilla ice cream…but this apple pie is here to be a rebel among pies. It’s vegan, it’s made with apples, it’s a pie and it has nothing to do with dessert. This apple and onions pie is savory, decadent and the ideal pie to serve for Thanksgiving, Christmas and any other occasion.

Should you use Cheese or tofu

You can use either vegan cashew cheese or silken tofu in this pie recipe…or any other type of vegan cheese you prefer. The cheese (or tofu) add a silky, creamy texture to the pie that compliments the crunchy almonds in the best way possible. 

Note: If you are vegetarian you can use vegetarian feta cheese or any other type of vegetarian cheese you prefer. 

What to do if you are allergic to nuts

If you are allergic to almonds, or simply don’t like them, you can leave them out of the pie and add roasted chickpeas instead. Roasted chickpeas adds a bit of the same crunch and also adds a little extra protein. 

If you are allergic to nuts you will also want to use silken tofu or another vegan cheese substitute instead of the cashew cheese.

Vegan pie dough

You can make your own vegan pie dough or buy a vegan ready to make pie dough at the grocery store. I like to make my own vegan pie dough when I have the time, but on a busy day I will just use vegan pie dough from the grocery store. 

Most doughs at the grocery store are made with oils, but be sure to read the ingredients list to make sure it’s vegan.

  • Preheat oven to 400F. 
  • Heat olive oil in a large frying pan and add apple wedges and onions. Let the mix cook for 3 minutes before adding all the spices. Mix together well and let it cook until the onions are softened. 
  • Grease a pie plate with olive oil and line with the pie dough. Fill the pie with the apple mix and top with almonds and cashew cheese or tofu.
  • Bake the pie in the oven for 25 minutes or until the dough is baked and the pie is golden on top.Top the pie with fresh herbs and serve.

  • 1 Pie Dough
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 5 Medium Apples Sliced into wedges
  • 3 Medium Onions Sliced
  • 2 cloves Garlic Minced
  • ½ cup Vegan Cashew Cheese or Silken Tofu
  • ½ cup Almonds
  • 1 tbsp Curry Powder
  • 1 tbsp Greek Spice Mix
  • 1 tsp Dried Thyme
  • 1 tsp Sambal Oelek Chili paste
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 tbsp Fresh Herbs Topping
