- 2 1/2 cups (315g) all-purpose flour – use your favorite all-purpose gluten free flour mixture if needed
- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter chilled and cubed (regular butter or vegan butter)
- 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (120ml) ice water
For the best apple pie filling Filling:
- 6-7 cups apples ((about 6–7 medium-sized apples) peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp works well)
- 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup (50g9 light brown sugar packed
- 1 tablespoon (15g) all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon (15g) lemon juice
For Assembly:
- 1 tablespoon (15g) unsalted butter cut into small pieces, regular or vegan butter
- 1 egg for egg wash, or milk (regular milk, butter milk or plant milk)
- 1 tablespoon (15g) granulated sugar (for sprinkling on top)

How to make the best flaky apple pie crust
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the chilled, cubed butter.
- Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Form it into two disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Making the best apple pie filling
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated.
Assembling the Award Winning apple pie:
- Roll out one disk of dough on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie dish. Place it in the dish and trim the edges.
- Pour the apple filling into the crust and dot with butter pieces.
- Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
- Beat the egg and brush it over the top crust. Sprinkle with sugar. (For vegan apple pie brush with plant milk)
- Cut a few slits on the top for ventilation.
- Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
