In this baked sweet potato tater tots post you will find

4 simple Ingredients to make sweet potato tater tots

Mashed sweet potatoes (about 2 medium sized sweet potatoes) – I usually make these tater tots with freshly baked sweet potatoes, but you can also use leftover mashed sweet potatoes to make these tater tots. It’s a great way to use use leftovers.

Almond flour or almond meal – we’re working with almond flour as the gluten free binder that makes these tasty vegan tots fluffy and just the right amount of crunchy on the outside. If you’re allergic to nuts you can substitute the almond flour with breadcrumbs or oat flour.

Cheese or nutritional yeast – we’re adding nutritional yeast, or shredded cheese to make these tender sweet potato nuggets extra rich and cheesy. If I’m craving extra cheesy flavors (and I usually am) I like to add vegan shredded cheese and 4 tablespoons nutritional yeast. It creates the most luxe and satisfying cheese flavor and an extra fluffy tater tot texture.

Seasoning – garlic powder, dried oregano, smoked paprika, and salt.

Tips and tricks to making the best vegan gluten-free tater tots

The best flour – these easy sweet potato tots are completely gluten-free. We’re working with almond flour to make everything stick together. If you don’t have almond flour at home, chickpea flour or oat flour will also work. Regular flour or breadcrumbs is also fine if you don’t need a gluten-free recipe.

Leftover veggies – leftover vegetables work great in this healthy vegetable tots recipe. You can add 1/2 cup chopped cooked cauliflower, broccoli, bell peppers or zucchini. Depending on the vegetables you use you may need to add a little more almond flour to keep everything sticking together well.

Baking the tots – whether you’re baking your tots in the oven or in an air fryer the steps are all the same. Bake for 20 minutes or until the tots are crispy and golden brown. Flip them over halfway through baking to make sure they become nice and crispy on all sides.

Baking tip – place the tots on a lined baking sheet with a finger width space between them to allow the tots to get crispy on all sides. If you place the tots too close together the air can’t move around the tots and they may get soggy.

Shaping tater tots

Shaping the tots – Either use two spoons to scoop up a small portion of the sweet potato mixture and shape it into 2-inch log-shaped tots. Make 18 tater tots and place them on a lined baking sheet.

Second shaping option: Try putting the sweet potato tot mixture into a piping bag and squeeze the mixture into 2-3 inch long logs, depending on how big you like your tots. I usually squeeze out 2” logs, cut with a knife to get a clean edge, and repeat until the entire mixture is used.
